Defragment Your Hard Drive!

This is one of the most important things that will give you more performance on your computer system. The more you use your computer, the more junk piles up and gets lost. The more fragmented a computer, the slower it goes as each program is spread out around the system. When a defragment is done, the files are compressed and are made easier to access.

NOTE: to efficiently defragment a hard drive, it likes to have 25% free space. It can still do the defragmentation with only 15% free space, but it takes quite a bit longer. Delete any unnecessary files before deframenting your drives.

To defragment your hard drives; double-click on My Computer. Right-click on the c-drive and click on Properties.

Click on the Tools tab and choose the bottom button, to Defragment Now.. Click on the appropriate drive, and then on Defragment.

This can take some time; from 20 minutes to hours. It is best to let this one run over night, as well, but it is well worth it.

The Evil NV4_Disp Nvidia Driver Error

For those who have NVIDIA cards and have come up with the error: "NV4_Disp has run into an infinite loop" and had their computers end up at the BSOD (Blue Screen Of Death); there are a couple ways to get rid of this error.

The first thing you should try with this Error is check if your Graphics card Drivers are up to date from the NVIDIA site. If you had just upgraded your driver for the graphics card and then the error occurred, you may have not uninstalled the driver first before reinstalling the new driver.

In this case you will need to download a program called "DRIVER CLEANER PRO" which you can get free from http://www.download.com. Once you run the program it will include very detailed instructions on how to remove all the corrupted NV4 files.

After you have finished using the walkthrough, re-download the new drivers from NVIDIA and install them.

This should resolve the issue but if not, there are two more steps you can take.

The next step, which could be taken to resolve this issue, is this:
Go into your c:/windows/system32 folder. I have found that you may have more than one of the same driver so go back and reinstall the newest NVIDIA drivers from the NVIDIA website. Once this is done, go back to the c:/windows/system32 folder and get rid of the other nv4_disp.dll files and kept the one for the newest drivers.

The last step, which is very extreme but in some cases will require it, you may need to reformat your whole system if it has not been done in awhile. Reformatting the system will remove all old drivers and allow you to start from scratch. This will resolve any drivers conflicting with each other and probably speed up your system.

Hope this helps you with the NV4_Disp error.

What you should know before calling a geek!

Many companies such as Futureshop, Staples, and Bestbuy have technical centers where anyone can bring in a PC and ask for it to be repaired. The job gets done and everything should be working great! But then comes the bill for a huge sum of money which was agreed upon before the repairs started.

As you look at the charges on the paper ($40 for problem solving and then $80/hr for labour*) you wonder to yourself why you must pay such a hefty price?!

So why wouldn't you learn a bit of computer repairs yourself and save a whole bunch of money?

I'm here to show you a bit about home repairs that you can do easily and save yourself a whole bunch of money.

You may be asking yourself 'why is this person willing to share information with me at no cost, when they could be charging me for the knowledge they have?'

The answer is simple. I fix computers locally in my area but would like to help others cut costs for computer repairs who don't live where I work. I know its hard to save money as I am a college student myself trying to keep student debt away. So now I have decided in my spare time to post some information that may help you cut costs on fixing a computer and give me a chance to put my name out there.

In the days, weeks, and months to follow I will be posting valuable information which you can hopefully use to keep your computer running smoothly.

All the best from your little Kelowna Techy,

JP L.
